As you can see above I've added some new links in the form of easy to find buttons.
The first goes to our Origins 2010 page with all the necessary information you might need to come and play our games. Expect more stuff to show up on a regular basis as the end of June approaches.
The second goes to our new Twitter feed. It's free and its reasonably fun. It also gives everyone here at 40KOrigins Labs a way to provide new material on a daily basis. A lot of new stuff isn't just suitable for a long blog post (or worth the time for one), so this is a way of letting it be published.
Anyway, more reasons to stop on by -- and attend Origins 2010!
...if you play one of our games at Origins this year (more on this below).
I haven't posted in a while, but not because I haven't been busy with 40KOrigins stuff. It's just not ready to be posted to the blog for various reasons (not finished, not finalized, not approved, etc). However, I can let you in on some of the recent developments:
- We already have far more prize support than last year and we expect/hope for even more in the coming weeks. All our tournaments will offer prizes; the only question is how big.
- We will be offering an entire gaming packet of information that will have all you need to play any and all of our games.
- Plus, everyone who plays one of our games (multiple times if you play multiple games) will get a free thank you gift.
I also have an idea that we are mulling around here at 40KOrigins Labs which I want to open up to general comment -- namely, the possibility of doing our own Painting Contest.
The Grand Daemon offers the "Slayer Sword" for the best paint job, so we would like to offer the "Golden Gladius" to whomever wins our contest. This first year would have a limited range of categories -- Single Miniature; Squad/Regiment; Large Miniature -- but winners of each would receive prizes as well as the Grand Champion. Any models for any Games Workshop game would be accepted, not just Warhammer 40K.
My personal inclination is to insist on actual GW models, but then again we could open it up to any model from any manufacturer as long as it is clearly meant to represent a figure/unit from a GW game. So, you couldn't just, say, offer up a random warjack from Warmachine (even if the models are quite cool), but you could offer up a unit of "Cygnar" cavalry if painted as Empire Knights (with the right paint scheme and heraldry).
The Painting Contest is not a done deal, but we are leaning in that direction. Origins does already have a generic painting contest, but it is hardly supported and seldom attended. I'd like to see something more special to encourage people to go all out with their paint jobs and in general draw attention -- after all, don't we all like seeing pictures of great paint jobs? We already have the necessary display cases and other related material. We just want to make sure there is a basic level of interest out there.
So, what do people think?
Here is a "generic" flier we've done up for the upcoming 40KOrigins events at this year's Origins. If you are at Adepticon you may have already seen it on their flier table, but otherwise it works as a handy way to keep everything straight when it comes to all the stuff we are running this year.

We here at 40KOrigins labs are always hard at work planning for the upcoming Origins convention. This includes designing possible scenarios for the games.
Here is a basic design for a 40K tournament scenario I call "Battlefield Courier." Tell me what you think.
-----------------------------------------
Starting Locations: Opposite diagonal sections. No unit may start within 6" of the middle point or 12" within an enemy unit (the first should generally make the second work).
Special Mission Rules: None (Therefore no reserves or Deep Striking as scenario options)
Objective: Each side has an important package -- battlefield intelligence, ancient technology, etc -- that needs to be transported to headquarters as soon as possible. As it happens both of the detachments on either side carrying this objective have run into each other in a section of no-man's-land. Both sides are tasked with: A) Carrying their objective across the battlefield and exiting with 12" of their enemy's starting corner; transporting as many units as they can along with the package off the board, and; capturing the package of the other side and taking it with you.
The objective can only be carried by infantry -- or a Troops choice if you have none. Either way it cannot be carried by a unit that infiltrated at the start of the game. The infantry can be in a transport, but the nature of the package is such that it takes an entire round to load it so you cannot enter a transport and move (or vice versa) in the same round. Likewise, the enemy can detect where the item is at all times.
If the unit carrying the objective is destroyed, its transport destroyed, or is forced to retreat it drops the package automatically. It can be picked up by any infantry unit outside a transport as a free action -- meaning that the unit can otherwise move as normal (save for the transport limitation above). You pick it up during your movement phase and can pick up the objective as long as no one else has it -- even if an enemy is right there within 1". When dropped it is placed at the feet of the unit that just died or is retreating.
Victory Conditions: Uses victory points with the following additions -- Exiting the map with your objective and/or the enemy's gains you 250 victory points each. Any of your units that succeeds on exiting the board from within 12" of the opposite corner counts as half its victory points for you.
Scenario Points (These count toward your final tournament score):
Difference between Winner and Loser:
> 1851 = Crushing Victory -- 20/0 points
1850 - 1251 = Major Victory -- 15/5 points
1250 - 626 = Minor Victory -- 12/8 points
< 650 = Draw -- 10/10 points
Scenario Bonuses:
+1 Have Exited Board with Enemy's Objective or have it in your possession at the end of the game
+1 Your most expensive unit survived the game in any condition short of destroyed
-1 You managed to not exit with any units or even have any in your enemy's starting quarter at the end of the game
Here is the basic rundown of the events that 40KOrigins is offering at this year's Origins Game Fair. These events have not received final approval from GAMA (the people who run Origins), so there may be minor scheduling changes. However, I would be surprised if there are anything beyond small tweaks (and probably not even then).

For better descriptions of the events listed above take a gander at this pdf file.
The first listed is the full descriptions while the second is the "mini" description that will show up in the events listings in the Origins convention book. Like the schedule above there may end up being minor changes.
You can also read everything together on our permanent 2010 Origins Events Page.
BTW -- We are adding no additional cost to any of our events, even the ones offering prizes. So, your only cost is what Origins applies to all events (which depends on the length).
...for finding a use for my new case.
I received an interesting and cool gift for my last birthday -- a display case perfect for figures of Inquisitor size or smaller.
I plan on using it for this Origins (and the one we used last time, which was unfortunately inferior), but the question now is exactly for what. One idea is a painting contest for GW miniatures -- the Origins Painting contest is, shall we say, lacking -- or showing off some of the individual models we will be using for any one of our various games (which we aren't using them, obviously), but maybe there are other options out there. Anyone have a good idea?
I haven't posted much this last week, but that's because I and the rest of the 40KOrigins crew have been hard at work finalizing our plans for this year's Origins Game Fair. I don't want to give out the details before GAMA (the guys who run Origins) give their approval, but I can list the basics:
25 Total Events
11 Different Events
3 Prestige Tables with Extensive Terrain
3 Different Tournaments -- all with prizes
300 Event Hours worth of material!
We will have events for everyone from beginner to veteran, from those who want to bring their favorite armies to those who want to bring nothing (and still play). In fact, most of our events will have all materials provided. We will also provide a learning event for those who want to build and paint their 40K armies better.
In short, we are providing more than twice the amount of last year and with more variety. So, if you like Warhammer 40K you should be attending Origins 2010!
Just a quick note to say that with the deadline for Origins events coming very quick we here at 40kOrigins Labs are hard at work with planning. Our new idea is to greatly raise the number of events by working with other groups. The upside to that is that if there is anything that might interest when it comes to 40K (and perhaps something else GW) you'll likely see it this coming year!
Expect a lot more information early next week after the deadline has past -- and start making your preperations to have a great time at Origins in Columbus, OH -- June 23-27
I guarantee you'll enjoy yourself and be supporting GW games at Origins in general. The more attendence and excitement we get the one year the bigger and better things becomes the next. My hope is to turn GW at Origins into one of the top ten premiere events in the USA. We just need your help and fun to get there!
Keep tuned in!
