Planning for Origins 2010 -- Input Needed

Posted by Ranillon on 2. February 2010 23:39

We here at 40KOrigins.com labs are feverishly (well, at least consistently) working on planning for this years upcoming Origins.  We learned a lot from last year and want to make this one better.  That means trimming what didn't work, boosting what did, and offering a certainly level of variety.  To that last end I have a personal idea that I want to put out there for people to consider.

I've been trying to get into Warhammer English Civil War recently.  As an enthusist of military history, miniatures, and Warhammer Empire armies ECW is a natural fit.  The armies of the period were very close to what the Empire army in Warhammer is (technically speaking, Empire borrows quite heavily from the Italian Wars of the 16th Century, a bit earlier than the mid 17th-Century English Civil War).  This includes similar forms of cavalry, musketmen, and pikes.  The rules will be highly familiar to anyone who has played regular Warhammer, but with a number of interesting tweaks to fit the period.

So, my idea is to have a demo game -- everything provided -- of Warhammer English Civil War where 2-6 players (each playing all or part of one side) can fight each other over a few hours.  It would be a way to offer a taste of both historical gaming and Warhammer (minus the magic) without expecting people to have finished ECW armies ready-to-go.

If you are into military history, you're covered.  If you are into Warhammer, you're covered.  And, if you just want to try something new you are also covered.  It likewise gives me a reason to paint up some ECW (no, it's not wrestling) armies.  All-and-all everyone benefits, assuming there is interest.

So, what do people think?  Note that you don't have to be planning on attending Origins or being at the game to give a thumbs up.  I just want to know if it would be otherwise tempting.

Have very clear rules for how the tournament will be run.  What FAQ's will be used.  If phase out will count full points.  I hear that was an issue last year.  I suggest using official GW FAQs and the INATFAQ.  The INATFAQ is very good and can be gotten for free over at dakkadakka.com

Listing what missions you could be playing and the rules and how scoring will work for each mission, sort of like how 'Ard Boys missions are would be great.

while I like the idea of posting the missions ahead of time it sorta takes all the fun out of it doesn't it?

I would also like to take a serious look at the missions book before we make a final decision there.

As far as the FAQ  we will be using the official ones I'm sure.

Running missions out of the mission book would be cool.  What I meant about home brew missions was if it was going to be something out of the ordinary like a special rule in effect that people have times to ask questions about it.  But if they are just going to be official missions but we are only going to run say 3 of the nine missions, but you had to prepare for any one of them, then it would allow for some planning on how you would deploy and play those objectives.  Granted not knowing the missions has that element of thinking on your feet.  My biggest fear is how scoring is going to be done.  I hope that it would be spelled out way in advance, so if facing certain armies I can expect to get Kill Points for this.  What happens with Necron Phase out?  how is it scored.  Things such as this.

The key to having missions is it makes people take troop choices instead of have 2 bare min. size choices and max out on other FOC choices that is why missions are important and considering almost 25% of the current missions are objective based.

I agree with everything you guys have said. We did well last year, and there are a few things we need to iron out yet. This kind of input helps us make this year even better!

I doubt I'll come to the event, but I'm interested in the ECW for all of the reasons you are, so I'd like to see what you think of the book/game/models.

In what way is it different to WFB?   (Aside from the lack of magic.)   What are the 'interesting tweaks'?

    I'm intrigued.
