Mass Effect 2 came out from Bioware a few weeks ago and I've been having a complete blast playing it. It may quite frankly be the best first person shooter I've ever seen. Not just because the shooting part is good, but because of the depth of story and cinematic action inherent to the game. It's a game that often has the look and feel of a full scale science-fiction movie -- and in this case that is definitely a good thing! Take a look at this clip I posted from the game:
(Warning: If you are actually playing the game this is a spoiler so you may want to return after you've finished)
Keep in mind that you are watching cutscenes from a PC game, not an actual (if computer generated) movie. As a movie it is pretty good, but as part of a first person shooter it is amazing. Add in the rich background of the setting and you get a great game.
So, any and all 40k version of such games should keep Mass Effect 2 in mind when developing their games as something which to aspire -- and hopefully excede. It shows you what is possible and with the incredible depth of the 40K universe there are stories ready to be told that should blow all of us away (at least figuratively -- literally might hurt).
I'm going to be awfully disappointed if after seeing a 40K shooter I am still left thinking "Mass Effect was better". The 40K Universe is rich enough to beat anything out there if presented right.
