New Dark Eldar Promo Pics!

Posted by Ranillon on 26. September 2010 15:20

Games Workshop was kind enough to post some pictures of the upcoming Dark Eldar this morning.  If you haven't already seen them take a look:

I am of two minds seeing these -- they are clearly just a development on the old style, but done better.  If you already have Dark Eldar that means that your old models suddenly don't all clash with the new ones.  On the other hand it also means that the new ones don't seem to be the "whole new look" that was rumored to be coming.

I will withhold full judgment before seeing the entire range of new DE, but I have to say I am a tad disappointed with these.  Not that they are so terrible (or bad at all), but I was hoping to be blown away by the redone appearance of the army.

I was blown out of the water on many of the models. Just the detail alone was a huge improvement. Dark Eldar actually seem to resemble eldar now, which I always figured they should.

14 years of waiting for an update does tend to lead to a bit of high expectation. I think they are beutiful models and I am going to be hard pressed to not buy in.

I was personally hoping for Dark Eldar of the same general style as the Dark Elves (whose models I adore) -- regal, yet sinister.  The new DE shown in these promo pictures are just the same "Refugees from a Sadism Convention" as the old DE, if done a lot better.  Mind you, the models are still great, but I had hoped for something more conceptually stunning.

I guess whips and piercings = evil doesn't strike me as too original.

I think some aspects of the dark eldar do have some dark elfiness about them (curved blades and ornate, baroque looking armour) but also sharing some of the look of the eldar, which they share common ancestry with.

It is important that they look like the eldar but with a darker twist. I think if they looked too much like the dark elves then they would look too much like a fantasy army with no references to their sci fi nature.
